Approved education and training means arrangements made by the Government under the Employment & Training Act 1973 or equivalent legislation in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Approved education must be full-time (more than an average of 12 hours’ supervised study a week during term time) and can include:

  • A levels or similar, eg the International Baccalaureate
  • Scottish Highers
  • NVQ up to level 3.

Courses are not approved if they’re an advanced course, eg a BTEC Higher National Certificate or Diploma, a higher education course like a university degree.

The child must be accepted onto the course before their 19th birthday.

Training is approved if it’s unpaid and includes for example:

  • Traineeships
  • Apprenticeships
  • Foundation Learning Programmes
  • Get Ready for Work
  • Skillseekers
  • Jobskills
  • Training for Success: Professional and Technical Training
  • Pathways for Success: Pathways for Young People.
